EMPATHY ASSESSMENT: THE PRE AND POST QUESTIONAIRES

In your TCM course, you participated in an early semester empathy assessment with Dr. Renguette. She will also guide you through empathy activities as the semester concludes. Use this space to share and comment on empathy assessment related materials.

At the end of the semester, you'll participate in a second empathy assessment. How is this one different from the one you took at the beginning of the semester?

EMPATHY as a TOPIC Across Your Classes, and Your Experiences

As part of your end of semester reflection, you will comment on themes relating to empathy as part of understanding and engaging diversity. This will include diversity in STEM as well as diversity you observed in your classes, including L115 readings. For more on the reflection, visit the Reflection tab.

SAMPLE REFLECTION IDEA:

This semester I feel that I've become more empathetic by listening and reading with an open mind.

Listening: This semester I realized how important it is to listen as part of learning to be more empathetic. Taking time to talk with people from other backgrounds and listen to their stories helped me better understand some of what they've gone through and how this shaped the way they do things.

Reading: Going to see the play Pipeline then reading the script in literature class helped me think about what it's like for students in other places who feel like they are misunderstood or token stand-ins to represent the views of an entire race or culture. Not only is this unfair, but it's also bad logic. No one of us can say what everyone else thinks or believes. That kind of stereotyping is dangerous. I think this helps me see that my ideas about empathy should always be growing as I meet new people, read about other lives, and examine my own bias.
